Catnip isn’t bad for your cat. They will not overdose from eating it.
Catnip is a common name for the plant called Nepeta cataria. Nepeta cataria is a plant that comes from the mint family. This plant grows wild throughout America, especially in the Midwest.
The active ingredient that Is found in catnip is called nepatalactone. It is comparable to a chemical contained in a female cats urine. This may explain why male cats that are unneutered react way more strongly to catnip than neutered cats and female cats.
Cats that are younger than 3 months on average don’t respond to catnip, and over a third of adult cats don’t respond to it at either.
The changing reactions cats have to catnip are related to their environment, gender and genetics. Male cats tend to respond more strongly to catnip than females. Strangely, some cats seem to have a genetic resistance towards catnip. This isn’t fully understood yet.
